Following the visit to Qufu, we went to a town at the base of Taishan mountain, and on Saturday started out early to get to the top of the mountain. This took a long winding bus journey up the side of the mountain, followed by a long cable car ride up the side of some sheer cliffs to reach the complex of temples at the top of Mount Taishan. The temperature was at or below freezing, however at the altitude the sun was strong. In a shielded place away from the wind it was quite pleasant, however climbing through some of the walks the winds came in at about 30mph or more leaving it chilling cold.
The mountain has supposedly been visited by over 72 Chinese emperors on ascending the throne, coming to the mountain to be near to god, and to pray. The complex was full of tourists, many coming to give offerings at the many temples and shrines. The more determined ones walk up the side of the mountain, with the last part of the journey being along steep stairs cut into the side of the mountain.
